New Delhi: A cleanse or detox every now and then is really important to set your body on the right track and help you in weight loss. When you are looking for a time to start your detox, the weekend is the best. A cleanse may require you to withdraw from certain foods and beverages which can cause a loss of energy as the body adjusts to the change. Since the weekend is about unwinding and relaxing, it is the best way to begin a detox diet or routine.

While a cleanse is all about juices and healthy food items rich in antioxidants, we tend to believe that drinking coffee and including caffeine in our detox diet is not possible and not the best idea. However, it turns out, you can actually still drink your coffee while on a cleanse, and black coffee is the way to go.

Black coffee during a cleanse or detox

Black coffee can be a part of your detox diet for weight loss and cleanse if you feel the need for caffeine for energy or otherwise. Make sure you drink your coffee without any sweeteners or creamers as they can add calories to the otherwise zero calorie beverage. If you feel the need for caffeine, drinking black coffee is a better way to detox rather than withdrawing caffeine overall.

However, if you still want to include creamers or sweeteners in your coffee and just cannot have it plain, here is a guide for you.

If you really want to use a creamer, using plant-based milk like almond milk, soy milk, cashew milk, etc, are better options to go for, instead of making coffee with regular dairy milk. Use of artificial creamers should be strictly avoided. Using coconut palm sugar instead of regular white sugar, or even honey is a good way to incorporate sugar in your coffee for detox. However, omitting sugar may be the best way to go if you are trying to lose weight.

Why do you feel the need for caffeine on your detox?

Like already mentioned above, a detox diet requires you to withdraw from a lot of foods, a lot of which are rich in carbs – the main source of energy. The body can take a while to adjust to the change and therefore you may feel drained out of energy and weak. Your body may also be dependent on caffeine for energy. Therefore, while you do consume a cup of black coffee even on detox, the best way would be to reduce your dependency on caffeine, by including decaff in your regular coffee. Do this partially for one week and increase the proportion each week. This will help you to reduce dependency on caffeine to the minimum by the fourth week or so.

While you can have black coffee on detox, the best way to cleanse your body and systems would be to omit it all together on days that you are trying to wash out the toxins.
