Ernst Schuberth has written wonderful books on the teaching of geometry, but one should note that they are out of step with the progression of math skills recommended by Jamie York. Jamie writes on page 83 of his Making Math Meaningful: A Source Book for Didactics Math in Grades 1 Through 5, "We recommend freehand geometry in fifth grade, and geometric drawing (with compass and straightedge) for sixth grade, whereas Schuberth lists both of these for a year earlier."
Thus, Schuberth's form 4 & 5 book can exist seen as a grade v & 6 book. Here are his class 5 skills notes regarding lessons in Geometric Drawing, which we may use for this block:
- Ernst Schuberth - Freehand Geometry
- circle
circle with colour
distending, compacting, enveloping, dilating
Straight Lines and Points as Determinants of a Circle's Boundaries
tangents
pencil of lines
point row
circle area
Points and Direct Lines in Relation to the Circle
center point
centre lines
diameter
radius
passant, tangent, secant
chord
avoidance bespeak, boundary point, connexion point, vanishing betoken
circumvolve symmetry
symmetry axes
freehand geometry exercises
Cartoon with compass and straight border is then introduced and continues for the remainder of the book (pages 62-84)
A Geometry Joke
My friend was cold so I told her to go stand in a corner. Corners are 90 degrees.
Books to Buy
I'k suggesting two books: Sheen'southward Geometry and the Imagination (which is available at the Online Waldorf Library for free) and Barbara Dewey'southward Waldorf Geometry for Homeschoolers: Grade six (available in PDF format for $14.00). The link is to her online shop at Waldorf without Walls.
In brief, his book is better for WHAT to do and her book is ameliorate for HOW to do it.

Recorded here is my ain personal drove of manufactures, resource, favorite links, teaching ideas, and lesson plans. It encompasses many years, from the very beginning of my feel studying and learning nearly Waldorf to the nowadays fourth dimension. People from all around the world visit my site and recommend it to others. Welcome!
This site records my journeying. I hope my honesty is encouraging and helps break down some barriers that may forestall people from trying Waldorf methods. Because this is an ongoing site documenting my curriculum planning and ideas, some materials are more than Waldorf-y than others. Please feel free to take what you like and leave the residue.
I am currently teaching this main lesson cake, February 2017. When nosotros are washed I volition create a weblog post with photographs of all of Becca's MLB pages.
Listing of Stories
I chose a ii-cake treatment of Geometry this twelvemonth, in order to cover all of the material. (The third 6th course block is Business concern Mathematics.) I believe some families do String, Direct-Edge and Shadow: The Story of Geometry as a primary lesson block and so geometric drawing as a weekly follow-up special subject (akin to Form Drawing) throughout the year.
I decided that I didn't want and then much fourth dimension to pass between geometric drawings, and so that both the geometry discoveries and the fluency in cartoon and using the tools build in a more firsthand way, simply there's NO time in the introductory Story of Geometry block to do much drawing at all! Thus, a follow-up cake devoted completely to the drawing.
There isn't a story for each figure in Geometry simply Barbara Dewey suggests "The lesson should begin with a verse form or poetic prose, which will be recited at the get-go of each lesson. Information technology is important to have the artistic emphasis, even in science."
She suggests choose one of the following quotes from the prose of Joannes Kepler (1571-1630):
- The whole of creation forms a marvellous symphony in the society of ideas and of spirit as in that of cloth beings. All is held and linked together by mutual, indissoluble affinities; all forms a harmonious whole.
from Harmonies of the World
... all nature and the svelte sky are symbolized in the art of Geometria...
from Tertius Interveniens
If you haven't already washed Astronomy, here is a chapter from a free book offered online at the Baldwin Project (www.mainlesson.com) chosen Stories of the Great Scientists past Charles R. Gibson:
Johann Kepler (1571-1630): From Pot-Boy in a Tavern to Royal Mathematician and Astronomer
I chose the kickoff quote for usa to put in the main lesson book and the 2d i for us to recite each morning. Dewey besides suggests "The child should be able to write (with help) a description of how each construction was done to become with each drawing in the main lesson book."
We are using extra-big 12 x eighteen inch spiral bound MLBs which volition open and lay apartment more easily.
Hither was our structure:
Day One
- groundwork on Kepler
present and explain 2 quotes - learn shorter 1 for daily recitation - present new blue MLB - add longer quote in lieu of tabular array of contents page
figure 2, 3 from Sheen
(same every bit figure 2, iii from Dewey; Sheen shows amend how figure 3 is constructed)
provide compass and prissy new pb
Steps:
draw effigy on practice newspaper - may have to brand several trials to effigy information technology out
draft words of caption - how it was created
draw figure in MLB - put clipboard under page
(to protect other MLB pages from the compass point and to hold the paper nonetheless)
fine-tune words of caption and add to MLB
(we wrote it that day and not on the next day - she kept figuring out better how to describe the process as she did information technology)
here is a chalkboard drawing with an alternative quote to introduce Geometry - William Blake
and a chalkboard drawing of William Blake
and a third option for a Plato quote to introduce Geometry and a chalkboard cartoon
Day 2
- figure 4, 5 from Dewey
(effigy 4 is same as figure 4 from Sheen; Dewey provides extra logical extensions from this)
Day Three
- figure 5 from Sheen
Day Four
- effigy half-dozen from Sheen
(she put the intermediate step of figure half dozen -- with the full compass circles -- and the completed figure 6 in her MLB)
24-hour interval V
- perfect equilateral triangle
then effigy 8, 9 from Sheen
provide a protractor and a directly edge
The children should go quite conversant with these names and their meanings:
- equilateral (Latin), equal sides
isosceles (Greek), equal legs
scalene (Greek), limping, uneven
limp around the classroom with ane leg shorter than the other, being scalene triangles
Twenty-four hours Six
- inspired by figure 10 from Sheen, embrace image - create your own imaginative design!
Becca used a page from a 17 ten 20 inch pad of newspaper; this page is attached into the MLB and folds out to open
on the facing page, fig 10a from Sheen
acute, obtuse, and right angles
discuss acute-angle triangles, obtuse-angle triangles, correct-bending triangles
here is a sample chalkboard drawing for classifying triangles
sample "find the missing bending" problems chalkboard drawing
Day Seven
- figure 7, 8, 9 from Dewey
Twenty-four hour period Eight
- figure x from Dewey
using the colored pencils as she shows in her example (ruby, green, yellow, orange, blue)
showing how to summate how many lines connect the points of a hexagon (15)
Day Nine
- figure 12 from Dewey
bisecting an angle, making a 12 pointed star
how to bisect an angle sample MLB page
sample MLB illustration for 12 pointed star
Day Ten
- cover image from Dewey (same as figure 19 from Sheen)
a 24 sided regular polygon in a circle with all of its diagonals
each of the 24 athwart points is joined to every other one
there are birthday 276 straight lines in the figure
(calculate this, using one of the formulas from Dewey - given for effigy x)
some other version of the sectionalisation of 24 - chalkboard cartoon
Day Eleven
- figure 11 from Dewey
honeycomb
enjoy existent honeycomb with some real honey!
Day Twelve
- how to construct a perpendicular bisector sample MLB folio
- circumference
- diameter
- radius
- chord
- tangent
- secant
- arc
do this circle structure activity which teaches students how to discover the centre of a circle by constructing perpendicular bisectors
sample MLB page with terminology for The Circumvolve
don't forget to also include the definition of a circumvolve: a round plane figure whose purlieus (the circumference) consists of points equidistant from a fixed point (the center)
Solar day Thirteen
- figure 13 from Dewey
the living screw
beautiful and colorful case of a MLB page for this spiral made with an octagon
and a chalkboard drawing (without color)
Day Fourteen
- figure 14 from Dewey
variation on the living spiral
draw this and then compare to beautiful photographs of the spirals in snail shells
THE Cease!
At that place'south so much more y'all tin practice for this topic, merely Sheen specifically states that his book volition acquit the grade through several years of the Geometry curriculum. So don't panic or rush.
A Note:
I would never use these books for teaching any mathematical concepts because I recall they are too confusing, just kids who are older and already familiar with the concepts exercise savor reading them and catching all the puns. I introduced them later on the Circumvolve Terminology MLB folio on Day Twelve.
The series of 9 books past Cindy Neuschwander includes:
